Discover our program
Our volunteer programme aims to provide training in SCUBA diving, coupled with an introduction to scientific diving. You will get hands on with our monk seal monitoring project, as well as other aspects of our research and conservation work. You will be engaged in our environmental awareness initiative, beach and underwater cleaning, all while staying in the beautiful coastal town of Fiskardo.
In the first week of the programme you will be introduced to SCUBA diving in the PADI open water course. This is the internationally recognised basic qualification in diving. If you have already attained the open water certification then we can take you on to the PADI advanced open water course. We will also present the local marine species of Kefalonia so that you can learn to identify and study them underwater. Combining these skills, you will take part in an introductory session in scientific diving and fish surveys. This involves the use of scientific equipment such as lines and transects, and learning to record data underwater so that it can be analysed later.
During the fish identification portion, you will be introduced to invasive species including the commun lionfish (Pterois miles) and squaretail rabbitfish (Siganus luridus). We are monitoring the spread of these species as part of our scientific research. In addition, you will get involved with our monitoring programme for the Mediterranean Monk Seal, environmental awareness, beach and underwater cleaning initiatives. Of course, some of the activities will happen depending of weather condition, timming & scheddules, necessity or not at that moment.
